Roe v. Wade is hanging by a slim one-vote margin which could be lost with a change in the makeup of the U.S. Supreme court. That change could come soon as three justices are over the age of 70 and Justice Sandra Day O'Conner has stated her desire to retire. One of Roe v. Wade's staunchest supporters, Justice John Paul Stevens, is the most senior and recently celebrated his 82nd birthday.

Although there are no cases pending before the Supreme Court that could overturn Roe v. Wade, it is likely that an abortion case would come before the court if President Bush were to appoint even one more conservative, anti-choice justice.

We must be ready to respond quickly and with strength when a vacancy occurs. To do so we are putting an Emergency Response Plan in place and we need your help.

• Come to the San José Federal Building at First and San Carlos at 5pm on the day of the announcement of a vacancy on the court to demand protection of our rights.
  
  
• Make and bring Pro-Choice signs. Some signs have already been made and will be available but the more we have the better.
  
  
• Wear an Emergency Response Team T-shirt. Iron-on transfers with the NOW logo and the words "EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM" are available along with easy to follow instructions. • Spread the word. Let your friends and other organizations you are involved in know about the plan and urge them to participate.
